WELCOME TO OUR RECEPTION PAGE

ASPIRE - LEARN - FLOURISH
The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.
We are excited to welcome you to Reception! The EYFS framework marks an important step in their learning journey as they build on the foundations of the Early Years and grow into independent and confident learners. Our curriculum will focus on strengthening core skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, while also encouraging curiosity and creativity through science, history, geography, art, music, and physical education.
Alongside academic progress, we place great importance on developing social and emotional skills, helping children to form positive friendships, build resilience, and develop a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their school life.
We look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure your child feels happy, supported, and motivated to achieve their very best.
Key Information
Our Reception classes, Willow 1 and Willow 2, work as a shared learning environment where pupils free-flow across both classrooms and outdoor areas to access a wide range of engaging activities. This approach allows children to explore, play, and learn in a way that supports their independence and curiosity. The teachers and wider staff team work closely together to provide a rich and stimulating continuous provision that supports each child’s development and promotes meaningful progress towards their individual Early Learning Goals.

PE
Physical development is one of the prime areas of learning and development within the Early Years Foundation Stage. We focus particularly on children’s gross and fine motor skills by embedding coordination, control, movement as well as how children understand the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices in relation to food that they eat.
P.E. lessons will begin in Spring 1 term in the new year. P.E. lessons consist of structured teaching in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. To ensure full access and high performance in PE, your children need to come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days. These specific days will be available towards the end of December.
As part of the Physical activity sessions children need to wear:
-
Plain shorts / leggings / tracksuit bottoms (black)
-
Purple Elm Park Primary PE polo. Additional school jumper or fleece (purple).
-
They will also need black trainers.
Our Curriculum & Homework
Curriculum Overview
An early years curriculum overview is an open summary of what our young children will learn and experience throughout their early years learning. It outlines the key areas of learning, developmental goals, themes and different topics that will be taught and covered over the course of each term. The EYFS curriculum is based on the seven areas of learning which includes: Communication/Language, Literacy, Maths, Personal/Social/Emotional, Maths, Expressive Arts/Design and Understanding the World. Using the Early Years Curriculum we are able to ensure that there is a balanced, age-appropriate framework that provides meaningful learning experiences for all children.

Homework & Homework Expectations
Homework within the Early Years curriculum is not a statutory requirement. However, well-planned and age-appropriate activities at home can play a valuable role in reinforcing learning, encouraging parental involvement and developing positive learning habits. Our continuous home learning of basic skills link to everyday life that promotes interaction, play-based opportunities that support key areas of the EYFS framework. Out of the six activities that have been provided we would like families to choose three of them that your child will enjoy and will offer opportunities for further independence. Children writing their own name is an important and exciting milestone for children in the Early Years. It supports fine motor skills, letter recognition and a sense of identity and independence. We politely ask for parents to continue to practice name writing at home to further support their writing skills. We kindly ask for children to read at least three times a week at home to improve their fluency, comprehension and confidence.
