Dear Parents/Carers,

Year 5 Relationships & Sex Education Programme – Growing Up

As part of the school’s Personal, Social and Health Education programme, your child will soon receive a unit of lessons on relationships and sex education.  This is usually taught during the summer term of Year 5 and is planned for w/c 20th May.

The purpose of the upcoming unit is to provide knowledge and understanding of how our bodies change as we grow up and why they change; how babies are made and how babies are born. This is linked to learning about how safe and healthy relationships are based on love and respect. This is to encourage the eventual development of safe and healthy relationships in later life as well as about attitudes, which will help pupils to form relationships in a responsible and healthy manner and to appreciate the value of stable family life, including the responsibilities of parenthood.

The statutory sequence of lessons are:

  • Differences between girls and boys.
  • How our bodies change through puberty and why (all children learn about boys and girls)

The non-statutory sequence of lessons include:

  • How babies are made
  • How babies are born

All parents need to give signed consent for children to opt in or out of the non-statutory sequence of lessons.  As a school we believe this is an important part of a child’s education, therefore a meeting with a senior member of staff to discuss reasons for a decision to opt out will take place. If you choose this option, we ask you do this on an informed basis by reading through our Relationship and Sex Education policy on the school website and attend a preview of the materials used.  This will take place on Wednesday 24th April at 3.30pm in Poplar class.  Please complete the form below and return no later than Tuesday 26th March.  If you wish to discuss the matter further, please email lfuller.epps@theaspirelearningfederation.co.uk or contact the school through the school office on 01708 451463.

Yours faithfully,

Lesley Fuller
